INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 25, 2009  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the Juniata Locomotive Shop of Altoona,

2

Pennsylvania, for achieving a safety record of working 1

3

million man-hours without a reportable injury.

4

WHEREAS, The Juniata Locomotive Shop, located in Altoona,

5

Pennsylvania, employs a total of 950 employees, comprised of 50

6

supervisors and 900 craft workers represented by eight different

7

labor unions; and

8

WHEREAS, The Juniata Locomotive Shop's annual payroll exceeds

9

$45 million; and

10

WHEREAS, Locomotives have been manufactured and repaired in

11

Altoona since the 1850s for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn

12

Central, Conrail and Norfolk Southern; and

13

WHEREAS, The current shop complex was constructed in 1888,

14

and has subsequently gone through several significant upgrades

and modifications; and

WHEREAS, The Juniata Locomotive Shop is one of the premier

3

diesel locomotive repair facilities in North America; and

4

WHEREAS, The Juniata Locomotive Shop serves as Norfolk

5

Southern's primary heavy repair shop for its fleet of 3,800

6

locomotives; and

7

WHEREAS, Each year hundreds of Norfolk Southern locomotives

8

are completely overhauled at the facility and more than 5,000

9

traction motors are rebuilt; and

10

WHEREAS, Norfolk Southern is the only Class 1 railroad in the

11

United States that maintains 100% of its locomotive fleet in-

12

house; and

13

WHEREAS, Additionally, next generation prototype locomotives

14

are being manufactured at the Juniata Locomotive Shop; and

15

WHEREAS, As a testament to the quality of the workmanship

16

performed at the Juniata Locomotive Shop, through Thoroughbred

17

Mechanical Services, a Norfolk Southern subsidiary, the

18

employees at the Juniata Locomotive Shop work on equipment for

19

other United States and foreign railroads; and

20

WHEREAS, The employees of the Juniata Locomotive Shop reached

21

a significant milestone in 2008 by working 1 million man-hours

22

without a reportable injury; and

23

WHEREAS, The following employees of the Juniata Locomotive

24

Shop serve on its safety committee:

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Juniata

21

Locomotive Shop of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on the highly

22

commemorable and remarkable achievement of working 1 million

23

man-hours without a reportable injury; and be it further

24

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

25

the Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
