A RESOLUTION

Observing February 12, 2009, as the 200th anniversary of the

2

birth of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United

3

States.

4

WHEREAS, President Lincoln became the 16th President of the

5

United States on March 4, 1861, and served in that role until

6

his death on April 15, 1865; and

7

WHEREAS, President Lincoln was born into humble circumstances

8

on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, A strong believer in the values of education and

11

hard work, President Lincoln, who grew up in Indiana and into

maturity in Illinois, served in the Illinois legislature for

2

eight years and was a successful lawyer; and

3

WHEREAS, President Lincoln served in the United States House

4

of Representatives from 1847 to 1849 and ran for United States

5

Senator from Illinois in 1858, a campaign which, though

6

unsuccessful at the time, catapulted him into national

7

prominence and led to his nomination as the 1860 Republican

8

candidate for President of the United States; and

9

WHEREAS, President Lincoln's outstanding role as president

10

during the Civil War brought him historical recognition as one

11

of our nation's greatest leaders; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives observe February

13

12, 2009, as the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham

14

Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.
