A RESOLUTION

Expressing solidarity with Israel in its defense against

2

terrorism in the Gaza Strip. 

3

WHEREAS, The State of Israel is the chief ally of the United

4

States in the Middle East; and

5

WHEREAS, Palestinian terrorists of the Islamic Jihad and

6

Hamas in the Gaza Strip have recently fired hundreds of rockets

7

at civilian targets in southern Israel, ending a six-month cease

8

fire with Israel in declaration and in deed; and 

9

WHEREAS, During the six-month "state of calm," Israel allowed

10

the entrance of some 17,000 truckloads of humanitarian aid into

11

the Gaza Strip in full coordination with donor Arab countries

12

and international aid organizations, including the Red Cross;

13

and 

14

WHEREAS, During this same six-month period, 538 rockets and

15

mortars were launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip; and

WHEREAS, The latest terrorist attacks took place only days

2

after the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution

3

1850, which unanimously declared support for the peace process

4

between the Palestinians and Israelis; and

5

WHEREAS, Israel's military operations are an effort to defend

6

its citizens against the unspeakable horrors of ongoing,

7

indiscriminate terrorism and are aimed at dismantling the

8

terrorist infrastructure; and 

9

WHEREAS, Hundreds of innocent Israeli and Palestinian

10

civilians have been tragically killed due to ongoing escalations

11

of violence initiated by Palestinian terrorist organizations;

12

therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

14

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, expressing solidarity with Israel

15

as it takes necessary steps to provide security to its people,

16

remain committed to Israel's right to self-defense and support

17

additional United States assistance to help Israel defend

18

herself; and be it further

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives condemn the

20

firing of rockets into civilian areas by the terrorist groups of

21

Hamas and the Islamic Jihad; and be it further

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all states

23

and parties in the Middle East to declare their opposition to

24

terrorism and attacks on civilians and to redouble efforts which

25

pursue a lasting peace in the Middle East.
