A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the week of February 1 through 7, 2009, as

2

"Pennsylvania State Police Memorial Week" and honoring the

3

memory of the Pennsylvania State Police officers who gave

4

their lives in the line of duty in this Commonwealth.

5

WHEREAS, In the late 1800s, this Commonwealth found itself

6

torn by disputes between managers and laborers as Pennsylvania

7

made its transition into a major industrial center; and

8

WHEREAS, It became evident that the town constables, sheriffs

9

and similar local officials, who had been adequate to keep the

10

peace in more stable times, were unable to cope with the new

11

populations and the violent labor troubles of the times; and

12

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Police was established as an

executive department of State government by legislation that was

2

signed into law on May 2, 1905; and

3

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Police represent no class or

4

condition, no prejudice or interest and nothing but the

5

sovereign majesty of the law; and

6

WHEREAS, President Theodore Roosevelt described the

7

Pennsylvania State Police as a model of efficiency, a model of

8

honesty and a model of absolute freedom from political

9

contamination; and

10

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Police swear to serve

11

honestly, faithfully, and if need be, lay down their lives in

12

order to ensure the protection of the citizens of this

13

Commonwealth; and

14

WHEREAS, Ninety-one members of the Pennsylvania State Police

15

have given their lives in the line of duty since the department

16

was established in 1905; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory

18

of those 91 valiant Pennsylvania State troopers; and be it

19

further

20

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

21

week of February 1 through 7, 2009, as "Pennsylvania State

22

Police Memorial Week" in Pennsylvania.
