A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of October 6 through 12, 2008, as "Learn 2 and Serve Challenge Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's youth make important contributions to 4 the State's welfare every day of the year, and this Commonwealth 5 depends on youth as vital community assets; and 6 WHEREAS, Service-learning, an effective teaching method that 7 combines service to the community with curriculum-based 8 learning, is a hands-on approach to mastering subject material 9 while fostering civic responsibility; and 10 WHEREAS, Research has shown that service-learning has an 11 enduring positive impact on students' academic achievement, 12 personal and social development and civic engagement, 13 particularly among students from disadvantaged backgrounds; and 14 WHEREAS, The historically high level of volunteering 15 demonstrated by America's youth has been attributed in part to 16 the growth of service-learning in our nation's schools; and 17 WHEREAS, Young people will greatly benefit from expanded
1 opportunities to engage in meaningful service-learning; and 2 WHEREAS, Young people should be viewed as the hope, not only 3 of the future, but also of today, and should be valued for the 4 idealism, energy, creativity and commitment they bring to the 5 challenges in their communities; and 6 WHEREAS, Through service-learning, young people build 7 character and learn valuable skills that are sought by 8 employers, including time management, teamwork, needs-assessment 9 and leadership; therefore be it 10 RESOLVED, That the week of October 6 through 12, 2008, be 11 devoted to the recognition of everyone who contributes to the 12 civic and academic engagement of this Commonwealth's young 13 people; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That the week of October 6 through 12, 2008, be 15 designated as "Learn and Serve Challenge Week" in Pennsylvania.
