        INTRODUCED BY PIPPY, MUSTO, FERLO, COSTA, TARTAGLIONE, KASUNIC,
           BOSCOLA, WASHINGTON, FONTANA, PILEGGI, C. WILLIAMS,
           WONDERLING, O'PAKE, GREENLEAF, BRUBAKER, ERICKSON, TOMLINSON,
           RAFFERTY, LOGAN AND DINNIMAN, APRIL 30, 2008

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, APRIL 30, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing May 2008 as "Science: It's Elementary Showcase of
     2     Student Learning Month" in Pennsylvania and commending
     3     Science: It's Elementary for its outstanding contributions to
     4     the science education reform initiative.

     5     WHEREAS, During the month of May 2008, school districts
     6  across this Commonwealth participating in Science: It's
     7  Elementary will host showcases of student learning; and
     8     WHEREAS, Students will showcase scientific discovery and
     9  actively engage parents, teachers, community members and
    10  legislators with investigations from the Science: It's
    11  Elementary modules that highlight important science concepts
    12  sparked by hands-on, inquiry-based learning; and
    13     WHEREAS, Since its establishment in 1994, Achieving Student
    14  Success Through Excellence in Teaching (ASSET) has directly
    15  impacted more than 1,800 teachers and 125,000 students annually
    16  in approximately 40 private schools, charter schools and public
    17  school districts in western Pennsylvania; and
    18     WHEREAS, The Department of Education is now partnering with

     1  ASSET to provide teacher professional development for 2,600
     2  teachers, impacting nearly 59,000 students in 120 school
     3  districts across 47 counties throughout this Commonwealth; and
     4     WHEREAS, Because of the partnership between ASSET and the
     5  Department of Education, elementary school students are learning
     6  science through education practices delivered by highly
     7  dedicated and qualified educators who have participated in
     8  ASSET's rigorous professional development program; and
     9     WHEREAS, ASSET has bridged school districts in western
    10  Pennsylvania and across this Commonwealth with quality
    11  educational opportunities by bringing together governmental
    12  agencies, corporations, foundations and universities in support
    13  of science education reform; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of May 2008 as
    15  "Science: It's Elementary Showcase of Student Learning Month" in
    16  Pennsylvania and commend Science: It's Elementary for its
    17  outstanding contributions to the science education reform
    18  initiative.
