AN ACT 1 Designating State Bridge No. 36-4009-0030-0000, the newly 2 replaced bridge on Dillerville Road in the City of Lancaster, 3 Lancaster County, as the Edward Anthony Davis MEMORIAL <-- 4 Bridge. 5 WHEREAS, United States Navy Captain Edward Anthony Davis of 6 Lancaster County, ex-prisoner of war, was awarded three Silver 7 Stars, the Legion of Merit with combat citation, four Bronze 8 Stars with Valor Device, five Air Medals, two Purple Hearts and 9 three Navy Commendation Medals with Valor Device for military 10 service during the Vietnam era; and 11 WHEREAS, Born in Norristown and raised in Roxborough, 12 Montgomery County, Capt. Davis was a champion rower at St. 13 Joseph's Preparatory School, attended Villanova University and 14 was a 1962 graduate of the United States Naval Academy; and 15 WHEREAS, Capt. Davis was shot down over North Vietnam on 16 August 26, 1965, during his 57th combat mission off the aircraft 17 carrier USS Oriskany; and 18 WHEREAS, Capt. Davis endured captivity at the prisoner-of-war 19 camp known as the Hanoi Hilton through February 12, 1973; and
1 WHEREAS, Released with other long-serving prisoners of war as 2 part of Operation Homecoming, Capt. Davis returned with a puppy 3 he had liberated from his captors; and 4 WHEREAS, After repatriation, Capt. Davis completed graduate 5 studies in international relations at the University of 6 Virginia; and 7 WHEREAS, Capt. Davis was the Navy's Director of Advertising 8 and then Commanding Officer of Navy Recruiting District, 9 Harrisburg, before retiring in 1987; and 10 WHEREAS, An outstanding public speaker, Capt. Davis was POW 11 consultant to the National Vietnam War Museum and member of the 12 Lancaster Municipal Airport Authority, the Sertoma Club of 13 Lancaster and the Penn Manor School District Board of Directors; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, Capt. Davis died November 7, 2006, at 67 years of 16 age; and 17 WHEREAS, Capt. Davis was buried with full military honors in 18 Arlington National Cemetery. 19 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 20 hereby enacts as follows: 21 Section 1. Edward Anthony Davis MEMORIAL Bridge. <-- 22 (a) Designation.--The newly replaced bridge on Dillerville 23 Road in the City of Lancaster, Lancaster County, State Bridge 24 No. 36-4009-0030-0000, is designated and shall be known as the 25 Edward Anthony Davis MEMORIAL Bridge. <-- 26 (b) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and 27 maintain appropriate signs which shall display the name of the 28 bridge designated in subsection (a) at each end of the bridge. 29 Section 2.
