           SEPTEMBER 29, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Designating the month of September 2008 as "Brain Aneurysm
     2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3 WHEREAS, Today, one out of 50 people in the United States
4 currently have a brain aneurysm, a silent killer, which often
5 presents itself with no prior symptoms, or whose symptoms are
6 often ignored or misdiagnosed; and
7 WHEREAS, Studies show that approximately six million people
8 will develop an aneurysm which will not rupture; and
9 WHEREAS, An unruptured brain aneurysm can lead to fatigue,
10 short-term memory problems, speech problems, loss of balance and
11 coordination and changes in behavior; and

1 WHEREAS, The annual incidence of a ruptured aneurysm in the
2 United States exceeds 30,000 people and 10% to 15% of these
3 individuals will die before reaching the hospital; and
4 WHEREAS, More than 50% of the people who suffer bleeding from
5 an aneurysm die within the first month; and
6 WHEREAS, Approximately one-third of those who survive will
7 have residual major nervous system problems and will be left
8 with long-term memory problems; and
9 WHEREAS, Various risk factors can contribute to the formation
10 of a brain aneurysm or increase the risk of it rupturing; and
11 WHEREAS, These risk factors include infection, tumors,
12 traumatic head injury, drug use, smoking, hypertension and a
13 family history of brain aneurysms; and
14 WHEREAS, Women are twice as likely to develop a brain
    15 aneurysm than men; and
16 WHEREAS, Various signs can help detect the likelihood of a
17 brain aneurysm rupturing and often come on suddenly; and
18 WHEREAS, These signs may include stiff neck, nausea,
19 vomiting, blurred or double vision and seizures; therefore be it
20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
21 month of September 2008 as "Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month" in
22 Pennsylvania and, through public awareness, seek to minimize the
23 devastating effects of brain aneurysms.
