        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 12, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 16, 2008, as "Bike to Work Day" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, The national nonprofit bicycling safety and
     3  education association, the League of American Bicyclists, has
     4  declared the month of May to be "National Bike Month"; and
     5     WHEREAS, The League of American Bicyclists has declared May
     6  12 through 16, 2008, as "Bike-to-Work Week" and May 16, 2008, as
     7  "Bike to Work Day"; and
     8     WHEREAS, Friends of bicycling throughout this Commonwealth
     9  will be promoting bicycling as a wholesome, leisurely activity
    10  as well as an environmentally friendly alternative to the
    11  automobile during the month; and
    12     WHEREAS, Bicycling and other forms of exercise which increase
    13  flexibility and the heart rate for at least 30 minutes each day

     1  are vital to wellness and to physical, emotional, intellectual
     2  and spiritual health; and
     3     WHEREAS, The consumption of almost one billion gallons of
     4  gasoline could be saved each year if all drivers would
     5  substitute bicycles for cars in short commutes to work or
     6  shopping just once every two weeks; and
     7     WHEREAS, In addition, this Commonwealth is home to 93 rail
     8  trails totaling approximately 1,000 miles, and currently, the
     9  creation of more than 600 additional miles of rail trails are in
    10  progress; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Bureau of State Parks strives to develop safe
    12  bike trails in State parks which feature a variety of trail
    13  sizes, terrains and scenic views and which allow access to many
    14  resources, facilities and activities found within each park; and
    15     WHEREAS, The Department of Transportation, in cooperation
    16  with local municipalities, realizes and promotes the importance
    17  of bicycle safety and the department has included on its
    18  Internet website the Pennsylvania Bicycle Driver's Manual and
    19  the Bicycling Directory of Pennsylvania; therefore be it
    20     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 16,
    21  2008, as "Bike to Work Day" in Pennsylvania and urge all
    22  citizens to participate in the events planned.
