A RESOLUTION 1 Expressing profound sorrow for the death of firefighter Michael 2 David Crotty, who tragically lost his life while performing 3 firefighting duties in Harborcreek Township, Erie County, on 4 April 8, 2008. 5 WHEREAS, Michael David Crotty was born to David Crotty and 6 Barbara Beers Crotty in Erie on April 14, 1983; and 7 WHEREAS, During his formative years, Mr. Crotty spent time at 8 the Lawrence Park Volunteer Fire Department, learning about 9 firefighting and developing a desire to pursue a career as a 10 professional firefighter; and 11 WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Iroquois High School in 2001, 12 he enlisted in the United States Air Force to serve his country 13 and continue the pursuit of his dream of becoming a professional 14 firefighter; and 15 WHEREAS, While stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in 16 Anchorage, Alaska, Mr. Crotty worked as a paramedic and 17 volunteered at the Chugiak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department; 18 and
1 WHEREAS, After being honorably discharged from the United 2 States Air Force in August 2007 as an Airman 1st Class Medic, he 3 returned to Pennsylvania, where he served in the Lawrence Park 4 Volunteer Fire Department and rose to the position of deputy 5 chief; and 6 WHEREAS, Shortly after his return to this Commonwealth, Mr. 7 Crotty fulfilled his goal of becoming a professional firefighter 8 after he was hired by the City of Erie Bureau of Fire and 9 assigned to Engine Company No. 6, 3rd Platoon; and 10 WHEREAS, On April 8, 2008, Mr. Crotty responded to a fire 11 call in Harborcreek Township, where he took command at the 12 scene; and 13 WHEREAS, While working with his fellow firefighters, Mr. 14 Crotty was fatally injured when he was struck by a piece of fire 15 equipment, which separated from the aerial ladder of a fire 16 truck; and 17 WHEREAS, In performing these heroic duties, Mr. Crotty 18 tragically lost his life on April 8, 2008; and 19 WHEREAS, Mr. Crotty will be deeply missed by his parents, 20 David and Barbara Crotty, brother James and fiance Danielle 21 Jackson of Lawrence Park, grandparents Ray and Ellen Baybrook of 22 Orlando, Florida, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and 23 friends; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Crotty made the ultimate sacrifice while serving 25 as a volunteer and professional firefighter in his community; 26 therefore be it 27 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express profound 28 sorrow for the death of firefighter Michael David Crotty, who 29 tragically lost his life while performing firefighting duties in 30 Harborcreek Township, Erie County, on April 8, 2008; and be it 20080H0727R3654 - 2 -
1 further 2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay tribute to 3 and honor the memory of firefighter Michael David Crotty with 4 gratitude for his courage, leadership and selflessness in 5 protecting his community as a firefighter; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 7 the family of firefighter Michael David Crotty.
