A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of September 2007 as "Alcohol and Drug 2 Addiction Recovery Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Alcoholism and drug addiction is a major public 4 health problem in this Commonwealth and our nation; and 5 WHEREAS, One in ten Pennsylvanians suffer from the disease of 6 addiction; and 7 WHEREAS, One in four families has a member with an alcohol or 8 other drug addiction; and 9 WHEREAS, The cost for the effects of untreated addiction is 10 higher than the cost of heart disease and cancer; and 11 WHEREAS, Addiction treatment is highly effective for youths 12 and adults; and 13 WHEREAS, Addiction treatment prevents fetal alcohol and drug 14 syndrome and other addiction-related illness; and
1 WHEREAS, Addiction treatment reduces crime and driving under 2 the influence while improving safety in communities, 3 neighborhoods and schools; and 4 WHEREAS, Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that addiction 5 treatment saves at least $7 for every $1 invested; and 6 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives recognizes those who 7 have lost their lives to addiction and the suffering of their 8 bereaved families for which there is no measure; and 9 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives commends the leadership 10 and healing of self-help groups, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics 11 Anonymous, groups for families and addiction treatment centers 12 across this Commonwealth; and 13 WHEREAS, Throughout the nation, the month of September is 14 observed as "National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery 15 Month"; and 16 WHEREAS, The annual observance focuses on recovery and 17 treatment and allows the Commonwealth and our neighborhoods to 18 recognize the dignity of recovery and the benefits of addiction 19 treatment services; therefore be it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 21 month of September 2007 as "Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery 22 Month" in Pennsylvania.
