        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 17, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the Most Reverend David Allen Zubik, a native
     2     Pennsylvanian, who was recently named by Pope Benedict XVI as
     3     the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh of the Roman
     4     Catholic Church.

     5     WHEREAS, On July 18, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop
     6  Zubik of Green Bay, Wisconsin, as the 12th Bishop of the Diocese
     7  of Pittsburgh; and
     8     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik, a popular former Pittsburgh Auxiliary
     9  Bishop, was born on September 4, 1949, in Sewickley and grew up
    10  in Ambridge, where he attended St. Stanislaus Elementary School
    11  and St. Veronica High School before entering St. Paul Seminary
    12  in Pittsburgh; and
    13     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik's father and late mother, Stanley and


     1  Susan, resided for many years in Ambridge and were members of
     2  Good Samaritan Parish; and
     3     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik earned his undergraduate degree from
     4  Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1971 and continued his
     5  studies at St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore,
     6  Maryland, where he earned a degree in theology; and
     7     WHEREAS, In 1980 Bishop Zubik began graduate studies in the
     8  School of Education at Duquesne University, where he earned a
     9  master's degree in education administration in 1982; and
    10     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik has held a variety of posts in the
    11  hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church; and
    12     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik spent five years as Parochial Vicar at
    13  Sacred Heart Parish in Shadyside and then became vice principal
    14  of Quigley Catholic High School in Baden; and
    15     WHEREAS, Bishop Anthony Bevilacqua chose Bishop Zubik as his
    16  Administrative Secretary in 1987; and
    17     WHEREAS, In 1991 Bishop Zubik became the Diocesan Director of
    18  Clergy Personnel; and
    19     WHEREAS, In 1995 Bishop Zubik was named Associate General
    20  Secretary and Chancellor of the Diocese of Pittsburgh; and
    21     WHEREAS, In 1996, under Bishop Donald Wuerl, Bishop Zubik
    22  became Vicar General and General Secretary of the Diocese of
    23  Pittsburgh, overseeing day-to-day operations; and
    24     WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Zubik Auxiliary
    25  Bishop of Pittsburgh in 1997; and
    26     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik has served as Bishop of Green Bay,
    27  Wisconsin, since October 2003; and
    28     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik has served the Church on many boards
    29  and committees at the diocesan, local and national levels,
    30  including St. Paul and St. Vincent Seminaries, the Pennsylvania

     1  Catholic Conference of Bishops, the Duquesne University Board of
     2  Directors, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops'
     3  Committee on Priestly Life and Ministry and the United States
     4  Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Priestly Formation;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik is chairman of the United States
     7  Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on the Laity and
     8  serves on the conference's Administrative Committee, the Audit
     9  Subcommittee and the National Advisory Council; and
    10     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik is succeeding Archbishop Wuerl, who was
    11  Bishop of Pittsburgh for 18 years before his installation as
    12  Archbishop of Washington, DC, in June 2006; and
    13     WHEREAS, As stated by Archbishop Wuerl, "Bishop Zubik knows,
    14  loves and has served the Church of Pittsburgh, and has walked
    15  with it through all its many moments of challenge and
    16  development for the past 20 years"; and
    17     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik is known as a very prayerful, spiritual
    18  leader whose strengths are working for social justice and the
    19  spiritual renewal of the people; and
    20     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik is the fifth native son to lead the
    21  Diocese of Pittsburgh; and
    22     WHEREAS, Bishop Zubik's Mass of Installation is being held
    23  September 28, 2007, in Saint Paul Cathedral, Oakland; therefore
    24  be it
    25     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Most
    26  Reverend David Allen Zubik on being named the 12th Bishop of the
    27  Diocese of Pittsburgh by Pope Benedict XVI; and be it further
    28     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives warmly welcome
    29  home native son Bishop Zubik and wish him well on the occasion
    30  of his Mass of Installation and in his endeavors on behalf of

     1  the parishioners of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the citizens
     2  of the greater Pittsburgh community; and be it further
     3     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
     4  Bishop Zubik in care of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and to the
     5  Diocese of Pittsburgh, 111 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh PA
     6  15222.
