        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 25, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating Monday, September 24, 2007, as "Family Day - A Day
     2     to Eat Dinner with Your Children" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The use of illegal drugs and the abuse of alcohol
     4  and nicotine constitute the greatest threats to the well-being
     5  of children in the United States; and
     6     WHEREAS, Surveys conducted by The National Center on
     7  Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University have
     8  consistently found that the more often children and teenagers
     9  eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to
    10  smoke, drink and use illegal drugs; and
    11     WHEREAS, Teenagers who virtually never eat dinner with their
    12  families are 72% more likely than the average teenager to use
    13  illegal drugs, alcohol and cigarettes; and
    14     WHEREAS, Teenagers who almost always eat dinner with their
    15  families are 31% less likely than the average teenager to use

     1  illegal drugs, alcohol and cigarettes; and
     2     WHEREAS, The correlation between family dinners and reduced
     3  risk for teen substance abuse is well documented; and
     4     WHEREAS, Parental influence is known to be one of the most
     5  crucial factors in determining the likelihood of substance abuse
     6  by teenagers; and
     7     WHEREAS, Family dinners have long constituted a substantial
     8  pillar of family life in the United States; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate Monday,
    10  September 24, 2007, as "Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with
    11  Your Children" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
    13  residents of this Commonwealth to recognize and participate in
    14  this observance.
