A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the contributions made by the Pittsburgh Ballet 2 Theatre to the culture, economic development and tourism of 3 the Greater Pittsburgh region. 4 WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre was founded 38 years ago 5 as a regionally rooted, professional ballet company with an 6 expansive repertoire including works by the classical masters, 7 innovative works by contemporary choreographers and premieres of 8 original choreography; and 9 WHEREAS, As a member of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, 10 Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has grown to become one of the Greater 11 Pittsburgh region's major cultural institutions; and 12 WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and its affiliated school 13 are ranked among the top ten ballet companies in the United 14 States; and 15 WHEREAS, More than 80 artists and administrators are employed 16 by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, with total annual salaries and
1 benefits of $2.3 million; and 2 WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is one of only two major 3 arts organizations in the Greater Pittsburgh region to maintain 4 a resident company of artists; and 5 WHEREAS, Some 100,000 men, women and children are reached by 6 Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's performances and programs each year; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, Through five main stage productions, Pittsburgh 9 Ballet Theatre presents a schedule of more than 30 performances 10 each season, drawing more than 70,000 patrons a year to 11 Pittsburgh's cultural district; and 12 WHEREAS, Individuals from 60 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties 13 have attended a Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performance within the 14 last three years; and 15 WHEREAS, Individuals from all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico, 16 have attended at least one Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performance 17 over the past few years; and 18 WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has an annual subscriber 19 base of 4,100 individuals who reside in a 12-county radius 20 surrounding Allegheny County; and 21 WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre provides free performing 22 arts education programs to some 15,000 school children each 23 year; and 24 WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School is renowned as 25 a training ground for some 500 students, drawing dancers from 26 throughout the country and abroad for intensive year-round 27 study; and 28 WHEREAS, As one of the region's major cultural institutions, 29 Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and its attendees generate significant 30 economic impact through cultural-related spending annually; and 20070H0152R0984 - 2 -
1 WHEREAS, Through touring Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is sharing 2 this cultural asset with communities throughout this 3 Commonwealth; therefore be it 4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 5 contributions made by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre to the 6 culture, economic development and tourism of the Greater 7 Pittsburgh region.
