                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing March 25, 2007, as "National Medal of Honor Day."

     2     WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor in
     3  action against an enemy force that can be bestowed to a member
     4  of the armed forces, is awarded by the President, in the name of
     5  Congress, to individuals who have distinguished themselves
     6  conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their
     7  lives, above and beyond the call of duty; and
     8     WHEREAS, The people of Pennsylvania will forever be in debt
     9  to the recipients of the Medal of Honor for their bravery and
    10  sacrifice in times of war or armed conflict; and
    11     WHEREAS, The first Medal of Honor awards were presented to

     1  six men on March 25, 1863, by the Secretary of War; and
     2     WHEREAS, Only 3,443 individuals out of the millions of men
     3  and women who have served the United States in war, military
     4  operations or armed conflicts have been awarded the Medal of
     5  Honor; and
     6     WHEREAS, There were 111 living recipients of the Medal of
     7  Honor as of January 1, 2007; and
     8     WHEREAS, Records show that Pennsylvania ranks second among
     9  states, with 377 Medals of Honor recipients; and
    10     WHEREAS, It is appropriate to commemorate and honor the
    11  recipients of the Medal of Honor; and
    12     WHEREAS, The people of Pennsylvania and the United States
    13  should always be aware of the significance and meaning of the
    14  Medal of Honor; and
    15     WHEREAS, On February 15, 2007, the Congress designated March
    16  25, 2007, as "National Medal of Honor Day" in support of the
    17  efforts of national, State and local organizations striving to
    18  foster public appreciation and recognition of Medal of Honor
    19  recipients; and
    20     WHEREAS, March 25, 2007, is an appropriate date to observe
    21  "National Medal of Honor Day"; therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, to commemorate
    23  the heroism and sacrifice of Medal of Honor recipients and to
    24  promote public awareness of their individual valor, recognize
    25  March 25, 2007, as "National Medal of Honor Day"; and be it
    26  further
    27     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives support the goals
    28  and ideals of a "National Medal of Honor Day" to celebrate the
    29  contributions of Medal of Honor recipients.
