        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JANUARY 30, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating April 24, 2007, as "Pennsylvania's Day of
     2     Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923."

     3     WHEREAS, One and one-half million men, women and children of
     4  Armenian descent were victims of the brutal genocide perpetrated
     5  by the Turkish Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Armenian genocide and massacres of the Armenian
     7  people have been recognized as an attempt to eliminate all
     8  traces of a thriving and noble civilization more than 3,000
     9  years old; and
    10     WHEREAS, Revisionists still inexplicably deny the existence
    11  of these horrific events; and
    12     WHEREAS, Modern Turkey continues to deny and distort the
    13  facts of the Armenian genocide and honors the perpetrators of

     1  that crime against humanity as national heroes; and
     2     WHEREAS, Before the implementation of the Holocaust of
     3  European Jews, in order to encourage his followers, Adolf Hitler
     4  asked, "Who remembers the Armenians?"; and
     5     WHEREAS, By consistently remembering and openly condemning
     6  the atrocities committed against the Armenians, Pennsylvanians
     7  affirm the need for constant vigilance to prevent similar
     8  atrocities in the future; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Armenian people have not received reparations
    10  for their losses; and
    11     WHEREAS, Recognition of the 92nd anniversary of the Armenian
    12  genocide and education about past horrors is crucial to ensuring
    13  against future genocide; and
    14     WHEREAS, Armenia is now a free and independent republic,
    15  having embraced democracy following nearly 70 years of
    16  oppressive Soviet domination; and
    17     WHEREAS, Armenian Americans living in Pennsylvania have
    18  greatly enriched this Commonwealth through their leadership in
    19  business, agriculture, academia, government and the arts;
    20  therefore be it
    21     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    22  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania designate April 24, 2007, as
    23  "Pennsylvania's Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide of
    24  1915-1923"; and be it further
    25     RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the House of
    26  Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the
    27  Pennsylvania congressional delegation and to the Armenian
    28  National Committee of Pennsylvania.
