                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     2     Statutes, further providing for safety regulations; and
     3     providing for duration of use of school buses.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Section 4551(b) of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
     7  Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:
     8  § 4551.  Safety regulations.
     9     * * *
    10     (b)  Violation and penalty.--No person shall operate or
    11  permit the operation of a vehicle of a type specified in this
    12  subchapter which is not in compliance with the requirements of
    13  this subchapter or applicable regulations issued under this
    14  subchapter. [Violation] Except as provided under section 4554
    15  (relating to duration of use of school buses), violation of this
    16  section constitutes a summary offense punishable by a fine of
    17  not less than $50 nor more than $100.
    18     Section 2.  Title 75 is amended by adding a section to read:

     1  § 4554.  Duration of use of school buses.
     2     (a)  General rule.--No person shall operate or permit to be
     3  operated a school bus used for pupil transportation purposes
     4  beyond the end of the twelfth year from the date of manufacture,
     5  as noted on the vehicle registration, or at the end of the
     6  school year in which that date falls, whichever is later.
     7     (b)  Penalty.--Violation of this section constitutes a
     8  summary offense punishable by a fine of not less than $1,000 nor
     9  more than $2,500.
    10     (c)  Duty of department.--The department shall by regulation
    11  adopt specific requirements implementing this section and any
    12  additional requirements, not inconsistent with this section,
    13  which will ensure the maximum safety of school children
    14  furnished transportation.
    15     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
