HOUSE RESOLUTION

        INTRODUCED BY D. EVANS, COHEN, DONATUCCI, FORCIER, FRANKEL,
           JAMES, JOSEPHS, MELIO, MYERS, OLIVER, PARKER, ROEBUCK,
           THOMAS, WHEATLEY, YOUNGBLOOD, STABACK AND READSHAW,
           MARCH 7, 2006

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 7, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commending the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association for its
     2     outstanding record among the world's top dragon boat racing
     3     associations and wishing it success in its upcoming
     4     competitions in Welland, Canada.

     5     WHEREAS, Dragon boating, which has its roots in China
     6  centuries ago, is the second oldest watersport and vies with
     7  soccer as one of the world's most watched and most popular
     8  sports; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association is one of
    10  our nation's most competitive teams, and in the fall of 2005,
    11  the team represented the United States in Berlin and finished
    12  third in the Nations Cup races for both the Open Team and the
    13  Senior Team; and
    14     WHEREAS, Over the past 11 years, the club has represented the
    15  United States in the international world championships in
    16  Yuyang, China, in 1995, Hong Kong in 1997, England in 1999,
    17  Philadelphia in 2001 and Shanghai in 2004; and


     1     WHEREAS, In the 1997 and 2004 world championships, the team
     2  won gold medals in the 500 meter and 1,000 meter events; and
     3     WHEREAS, The club will compete for the World Title in the
     4  upcoming Club Crew World Championships in Welland, Canada, and
     5  will simultaneously vie for the national dragon boat racing
     6  title, the winner of which will compete for the world title in
     7  2007 in Sydney; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association has brought
     9  much honor to this Commonwealth and to the City of Philadelphia
    10  and has showcased the beautiful Schuylkill River with regattas
    11  featuring racers from around the world; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the
    13  Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association for its outstanding record
    14  among the world's top dragon boat racing associations and wish
    15  it success in its upcoming competitions in Welland, Canada; and
    16  be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    18  Kenneth Wong, President, Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association,
    19  137 N 11th St., Philadelphia PA 19107.
