        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 6, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of March 13 through 17, 2006, as "Multiple
     2     Sclerosis Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, In its mission to end the devastating effects of
     4  multiple sclerosis (MS) since its founding in 1946, the National
     5  Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more research, provides more
     6  services for people with MS, offers more professional education
     7  programs and furthers more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS
     8  organization in the world; and
     9     WHEREAS, MS is a chronic and disabling disease of the central
    10  nervous system in which the progression, severity and specific

     1  symptoms cannot be foreseen; and
     2     WHEREAS, Every hour of every day someone new is diagnosed
     3  with MS, a disease that can erode a person's abilities and
     4  hopes, halt a career and unravel the fabric of families; and
     5     WHEREAS, Relying on the support of caring individuals,
     6  businesses and foundations, the National MS Society strives to
     7  improve the lives of more than 400,000 people nationwide,
     8  including more than 19,000 people who make their home in
     9  Pennsylvania; and
    10     WHEREAS, For 60 years, the National MS Society has provided
    11  hope and help for Pennsylvanians with MS: hope through our
    12  extensive and promising local, national and international
    13  research programs, and help through client programs, which make
    14  daily life better for people with MS and their families; and
    15     WHEREAS, The goal of every National MS Society program is the
    16  self-empowerment of the person living with MS; and
    17     WHEREAS, Since 1946, the National MS Society has invested
    18  $460 million to find the cure for MS; and
    19     WHEREAS, This investment is paying off in significant
    20  advances in treating MS, such as new medications, which may
    21  reduce or delay future disability for persons with MS; and
    22     WHEREAS, While research advances have brought us closer to
    23  finding the cure, much work remains to be done, and services
    24  must continue to be provided to persons with MS; and
    25     WHEREAS, The National MS Society is driven to serve the
    26  constantly changing needs of persons with MS and their families
    27  by extending essential services to all who need them; therefore
    28  be it
    29     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    30  week of March 13 through 17, 2006, as "Multiple Sclerosis

     1  Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania in recognition of 60 years of
     2  research and services on behalf of persons with MS.
