                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the life and extending condolences for the supreme
     2     sacrifice of Police Officer Brian Steven Gregg, of the
     3     Newtown Borough Police Force, who was shot and killed in the
     4     line of duty on September 29, 2005, at St. Mary Medical
     5     Center, Langhorne, Pennsylvania, by a drunk-driving suspect.

     6     WHEREAS, Brian Steven Gregg, born April 10, 1959, in Bristol,
     7  was a longtime resident of Levittown, a 1977 graduate of Woodrow
     8  Wilson (now Harry S. Truman) High School and a graduate of Bucks
     9  County Community College; and
    10     WHEREAS, Mr. Gregg attended Ferris State University and
    11  earned certification as a heating, ventilation and air


     1  conditioning technician, and, after attending the Middlesex Fire
     2  Academy, he became a licensed fire inspector for the State of
     3  New Jersey; and
     4     WHEREAS, For 15 years, Mr. Gregg was a contractor and owned
     5  his own contracting business while pursuing his dream of
     6  becoming a police officer; and
     7     WHEREAS, Officer Gregg graduated from Temple University
     8  Police Academy in 2002, was hired as a part-time police officer
     9  with Newtown Borough in 2003 and was promoted to full-time
    10  service in October 2004; and
    11     WHEREAS, In the early evening of Thursday, September 29,
    12  2005, Officer Gregg responded to a report of an assault in a
    13  vehicle which was being driven in Newtown Borough and called for
    14  assistance from fellow Police Officer James Warunek; and
    15     WHEREAS, When the officers took the drunk-driving suspect to
    16  the St. Mary Medical Center emergency room for drug and alcohol
    17  tests, the suspect, who had been calm and cooperative up to that
    18  point, unholstered one of the police officer's service revolvers
    19  and began firing; and
    20     WHEREAS, Both officers and a hospital employee, Joseph Epp,
    21  were seriously wounded, and the suspect accidentally shot
    22  himself; and
    23     WHEREAS, The suspect, a convicted felon with a record of
    24  police assaults and attempted murder, then fired two more shots
    25  at Officer Gregg, tragically killing him, and attempted to kill
    26  Officer Warunek but was out of ammunition; and
    27     WHEREAS, The suspect fled the scene and was apprehended and
    28  subdued within a few hours, leaving family, friends and the
    29  community relieved but in a state of shock and mourning because
    30  of their enormous loss; and

     1     WHEREAS, Officer Gregg, beloved husband for 23 years of Kella
     2  Ann Kneubuehl Gregg, father of Kyle, son of Nancy and John Gregg
     3  and brother of Susan, Eileen and Jack, was courageously serving
     4  his fellow man and the community of Newtown Borough at the time
     5  of his death; and
     6     WHEREAS, Family and friends mourn the tragic loss of this
     7  generous man and remember his indomitable courage, kindness,
     8  enduring spirit, capacity to love and exemplary record of
     9  service; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
    11  and extend condolences for the supreme sacrifice of Police
    12  Officer Brian Steven Gregg, who died tragically on September 29,
    13  2005, in the line of duty in Langhorne; and be it further
    14     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be given to Mrs.
    15  Brian S. Gregg.
