        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 25, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of November 2005 as "Alzheimer's Disease
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disorder
     4  which causes progressive loss of memory and intellectual
     5  function; and
     6     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease was first described in 1906 and
     7  has been diagnosed in millions of people ever since; and
     8     WHEREAS, More than 500,000 older Pennsylvanians have
     9  Alzheimer's disease or related dementia; and


     1     WHEREAS, An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's
     2  disease; and
     3     WHEREAS, By 2050 the number of individuals with Alzheimer's
     4  disease could range from 11.3 million to 16 million; and
     5     WHEREAS, Finding a treatment that delays the onset of
     6  Alzheimer's disease by five years could reduce the number of
     7  individuals with the disease by nearly 50% after 50 years; and
     8     WHEREAS, Approximately seven out of ten people with
     9  Alzheimer's disease live at home, where family and friends
    10  provide almost 75% of their care; the remainder is paid care
    11  costing an average of $19,000 per year; and
    12     WHEREAS, Nearly all families pay for this care out of pocket;
    13  and
    14     WHEREAS, The tragic effects of Alzheimer's disease have
    15  spurred scientists and physicians worldwide to intensify their
    16  research efforts; and
    17     WHEREAS, Despite the painstaking efforts of researchers and
    18  other advocates, medical science has not found a cure or
    19  treatment for Alzheimer's disease; and
    20     WHEREAS, The public must access information about Alzheimer's
    21  disease and find ways to ease the burden on patients, families
    22  and caregivers; therefore be it
    23     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    24  month of November 2005 as "Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month"
    25  in Pennsylvania and urge all citizens of this Commonwealth to
    26  become better informed about the disease and its impact.
