        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 27, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of September 2005 as "Sickle Cell Anemia
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood
     4  Institute, 72,000 Americans are currently living with sickle
     5  cell anemia; and
     6     WHEREAS, The most recent statistics show that in 1999 501
     7  Americans died from sickle cell anemia and 60,000 Americans were
     8  hospitalized due to the disease; and
     9     WHEREAS, A report by the Centers for Disease Control and
    10  Prevention cites that between 1979 and 1995 Pennsylvania's
    11  sickle cell anemia mortality rate was 1.8 per 1 million
    12  individuals; and
    13     WHEREAS, According to the Congressional Black Caucus
    14  Foundation, approximately 2 million Americans carry the sickle

     1  cell trait, including approximately 1 in 12 African Americans;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, Approximately 1 in 500 African-American births
     4  result in babies with sickle cell anemia; and
     5     WHEREAS, According to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of
     6  America, approximately 1,000 babies are born with sickle cell
     7  anemia each year in the United States; and
     8     WHEREAS, In the United States the average life expectancy of
     9  a person living with sickle cell anemia is 45 years; and
    10     WHEREAS, There is currently no universal cure for sickle cell
    11  anemia; and
    12     WHEREAS, A public that is informed and educated about sickle
    13  cell anemia can better prevent and recognize the disease;
    14  therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    16  month of September 2005 as "Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month"
    17  in Pennsylvania.
