INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
JUNE 22, 2005
A RESOLUTION
1 Honoring the Borough of Wellsboro, Tioga County, on its 175th
2 anniversary.
3 WHEREAS, The area that was to become Wellsboro was opened to
4 white settlers after the Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1784 when the
5 Seneca Indians ceded all of Tioga County to the Pennsylvania
6 government; and
7 WHEREAS, Three years after the end of the American
8 Revolution, Thomas Tucker first set foot on the soil of
9 Wellsboro; and
10 WHEREAS, On September 1, 1786, Tucker, Deputy Surveyor
11 General of Pennsylvania, and his surveying party surveyed these
12 lands as well as Lawrence, Tioga and Middlebury Townships under
1 a Land Warrant issued to James Stuart, a land speculator, in May
2 1785; and
3 WHEREAS, Stuart and other speculators from Philadelphia
4 together owned about 65,000 acres in northern Lycoming County
5 and Tioga County; and
6 WHEREAS, When taxes became a burden, these landowners
7 conveyed to trustees who were tasked with selling the land; and
8 WHEREAS, Benjamin W. Morris bought all of Tioga County land
9 on April 7, 1802, and built the first log cabin on the knoll
10 overlooking Wellsboro, at the end of what is now Morris Lane;
11 and
12 WHEREAS, The name "Wellsborough," tradition says, honored
13 Mary Wells Morris, the wife of Benjamin Morris, whose brother
14 William Hill Wells was then one of the most prominent men in the
15 United States; and
16 WHEREAS, The Borough of Wellsboro was incorporated on March
17 16, 1830; and
18 WHEREAS, Wellsboro was divided into wards on April 7, 1885;
19 therefore be it
20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Borough
21 of Wellsboro on its 175th anniversary.
