INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 2, 2005
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of May 2005 as "Beef Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to 28,000 beef producers who 4 provide a safe, quality product to consumers across this 5 Commonwealth; and 6 WHEREAS, More than 1.6 million beef cattle in this 7 Commonwealth contribute $1.7 billion to the economy; and 8 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania implements veal, beef and dairy beef 9 quality assurance programs that train and certify producers in 10 best management practices; and 11 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania beef producers are stewards of the
1 land, promoting environmental practices that will allow them to 2 pass their improved farms and ranches to future generations; and 3 WHEREAS, Beef provides consumers in this Commonwealth with a 4 rich supply of important nutrients, including zinc, iron and 5 protein; and 6 WHEREAS, Nineteen beef cuts meet Federal Government 7 guidelines for lean with fewer than 10 grams total fat, 4.5 8 grams or less of saturated fat and fewer than 95 milligrams of 9 cholesterol per serving; and 10 WHEREAS, May is the beginning of the summer grilling season 11 and is a perfect time for Pennsylvanians to grill hamburgers, 12 steaks and kabobs; and 13 WHEREAS, The eighth and tenth largest beef packers in the 14 United States are located in Pennsylvania, accounting for more 15 than 1 million head of beef and dairy cattle harvested annually; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, The United States has less than 10% of the world's 18 cattle inventory but produces nearly 25% of the world's beef 19 supply; and 20 WHEREAS, Beef is consumed 77.8 million times each day across 21 the United States; and 22 WHEREAS, Consumer demand for beef increased 8% in 2004 and 23 more than 25% since reversing a 20-year decline in 1998; and 24 WHEREAS, Ninety percent of consumers are confident that 25 United States beef is safe; and 26 WHEREAS, Consumer spending on beef topped $70 billion in 27 2004; and 28 WHEREAS, Cattle inventory accounts for 94.8% of the total 29 value of livestock in Pennsylvania; and 30 WHEREAS, The beef industry provides more than 1 million jobs, 20050H0267R1760 - 2 -
1 including farmers, ranchers, stocker operators, cattle feeders 2 and hundreds of various allied industry partners and companies; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania supports the National Beef Ambassador 5 Program, which recognizes and awards youth for their 6 understanding of beef as an agricultural product; and 7 WHEREAS, The United States beef industry forms the largest 8 part of the nation's food and fiber system; and 9 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's cattle industry is agile, committed 10 and responsive to animal and human health issues, assuring 11 producers and consumers alike that issues concerning food safety 12 and wellness can be addressed promptly, professionally and 13 thoroughly; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 15 month of May 2005 as "Beef Month" in Pennsylvania.
