INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 6, 2005
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 15, 2005, as "Pennsylvania YMCA Youth and 2 Government Day" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The YMCA Youth & Government Program (Y&G) is 4 designed to encourage civic engagement by teaching the core 5 principles of democracy; and 6 WHEREAS, The State YMCA of Pennsylvania organizes Y&G clubs 7 throughout this Commonwealth in collaboration with local high 8 schools and branch YMCAs, coordinated at the State level; and 9 WHEREAS, While it is not easy to measure the impact that Y&G 10 has had upon the hundreds of teenagers involved annually, there 11 is reason to believe it is significant; and 12 WHEREAS, Countless persons have pointed to Y&G as a turning
1 point in their career exploration of such fields as politics, 2 law, education and social services; and 3 WHEREAS, For others, the experience confirmed their career 4 plans and enabled them to continue studies with increased 5 interest and confidence; and 6 WHEREAS, A recent study found that Y&G graduates are 30% to 7 60% more likely to report involvement in civic affairs than the 8 general population; and 9 WHEREAS, Part of the Y&G for 2005 involves a model government 10 convention in the State Capitol April 15 through 18, 2005; 11 therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April 13 15, 2005, as "Pennsylvania YMCA Youth and Government Day" in 14 Pennsylvania.
