        INTRODUCED BY CONTI, TOMLINSON, THOMPSON, ERICKSON, O'PAKE,
           FERLO, KITCHEN, BOSCOLA, KUKOVICH, SCHWARTZ, STOUT, PIPPY,
           WAGNER, TARTAGLIONE, D. WHITE, DENT, WONDERLING, PILEGGI AND
           GREENLEAF, MAY 17, 2004

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MAY 17, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing Smarty Jones' record win in the Preakness Stakes on
     2     May 15, 2004.

     3     WHEREAS, Smarty Jones, a thoroughbred horse born and raised
     4  in Chester County, Pennsylvania, is the offspring of Elusive
     5  Quality and I'll Get Along; and
     6     WHEREAS, Owners Roy and Pat Chapman of Bucks County named him
     7  for Pat Chapman's mother, Mildred "Smarty Jones" McNair; and
     8     WHEREAS, Smarty Jones received all of his training and made
     9  the first two starts of his racing career at Philadelphia Park
    10  in Bensalem, Bucks County; and
    11     WHEREAS, Smarty Jones won the 130th Run for the Roses in a
    12  thrilling two-and-three quarter length victory, becoming the
    13  first unbeaten Kentucky Derby champion since 1977; and
    14     WHEREAS, On May 15, 2004, Smarty Jones continued his winning
    15  streak in the 129th Preakness Stakes in Maryland, outrunning the
    16  field and winning in a record eleven and one-half lengths; and
    17     WHEREAS, By winning the Preakness, Smarty Jones has captured

     1  two of the jewels of horse racing's Triple Crown; and
     2     WHEREAS, Smarty Jones has captured the hearts of the citizens
     3  of this Commonwealth and the nation as a whole; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize Smarty Jones' record win
     5  in the Preakness Stakes on May 15, 2004, and pay tribute to the
     6  speed, spirit and unblemished record of this chestnut colt and
     7  to the achievement of the Chapmans, trainer John Servis and
     8  jockey Stewart Elliot.
