        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 20, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating the American Cancer Society for its commitment to
     2     research and public service and designating the week of March
     3     15 through 20, 2004, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in
     4     Pennsylvania.

     5     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society invested more than $130
     6  million in research in 2001, $25 million of which was used to
     7  fund research in this Commonwealth; and
     8     WHEREAS, This investment in research is paying off, with more
     9  than 60% of cancer patients surviving; and
    10     WHEREAS, Over the years and with funds raised from Daffodil
    11  Days, the American Cancer Society has made great strides in


     1  cancer research, including funding scientists who have
     2  discovered the Pap test, bone marrow transplant techniques,
     3  tamoxifen and Gleevec; and
     4     WHEREAS, Thirty-two Nobel Prize winners were funded by the
     5  American Cancer Society at some point in their career; and
     6     WHEREAS, One in every two men and one in every three women
     7  will develop cancer, therefore it is imperative for the American
     8  Cancer Society to continue to expand flower sales and volunteer
     9  participation in Daffodil Days so everyone can work together
    10  toward a cancer-free society; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
    12  American Cancer Society for its commitment to research and
    13  public service and designate the week of March 15 through 20,
    14  2004, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
