        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           DECEMBER 22, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating the Township of Easttown, Chester County, on the
     2     300th anniversary of its founding in 1704.

     3     WHEREAS, As William Penn's chartered province of Pennsylvania
     4  began to take shape, an 8.2-square-mile area of rolling hills in
     5  the extreme eastern portion of Chester County became Easttown
     6  Township in 1704; and
     7     WHEREAS, During the Revolutionary War, one of Easttown
     8  Township's residents, General Anthony Wayne, commanded American
     9  forces, and shortly after the Battle of Brandywine, he defeated
    10  the British in the Tarleton skirmish of 1777 at Signal Hill,
    11  located near the present intersection of Newtown and Sugartown
    12  Roads in the township; and
    13     WHEREAS, Construction through the township of the first paved
    14  highway in the United States in 1790 and the advent of the
    15  Pennsylvania Railroad both contributed to the development of
    16  Easttown Township as an early 1800s summer vacation spot for
    17  Philadelphians; and


     1     WHEREAS, A thickly settled farming district by the early
     2  1900s, the township also boasted of many fine country estates of
     3  wealthy Philadelphians who used the train on the socially
     4  renowned Main Line to commute to their city businesses; and
     5     WHEREAS, In the 1990s these estates began to disappear as
     6  land was subdivided for housing development, but the area's easy
     7  transportational access to Philadelphia, its recreational,
     8  cultural and athletic facilities and programs, and its historic
     9  landmarks have retained Easttown Township's enviable address;
    10  and
    11     WHEREAS, A second class township, so categorized based on
    12  population under Pennsylvania law, the township is inhabited by
    13  a socially and politically committed citizenry, many of whom
    14  serve on its excellent Library Board, Parks and Recreation
    15  Board, Planning Commission, Zoning Hearing Board and Municipal
    16  Authority; and
    17     WHEREAS, In addition, Easttown Township is served 24 hours a
    18  day by an outstanding township police department, township
    19  public works department, two volunteer fire companies in Berwyn
    20  and Paoli, and a township manager, solicitor and board of
    21  supervisors; therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate
    23  Easttown Township on its 300th anniversary in 2004.
