        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 29, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the achievements of Bob Hope, actor, singer,
     2     dancer, great humanitarian and kindhearted entertainer, who
     3     died on July 27, 2003.

     4     WHEREAS, Bob Hope, son of William Henry Hope and Avis Townes
     5  Hope, husband to Dolores Reade and father to Linda, Anthony,
     6  Nora and Kelly, was born in Eltham, England, on May 29, 1903,
     7  and came to the United States in 1907; and
     8     WHEREAS, Mr. Hope became a United States citizen in 1920 and
     9  embarked on a career of dancing, singing, acting, telling jokes
    10  and entertaining to the benefit of everyone around him; and
    11     WHEREAS, Mr. Hope earned recognition as a star on Broadway,
    12  radio, movies and television; and

     1     WHEREAS, Mr. Hope earned further recognition for his
     2  humanitarian activities, including entertaining United States
     3  troops stationed around the world, who fondly refer to him as
     4  "G.I. Bob," and working with the United Service Organizations
     5  (USO) and the military for almost 60 years; and
     6     WHEREAS, Mr. Hope was an avid golf player and fan who spread
     7  the joy of the game and who contributed to numerous
     8  organizations and communities through his charity golf
     9  tournaments; and
    10     WHEREAS, Mr. Hope was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal,
    11  the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Ronald Reagan Freedom
    12  Award and the Medal of the Arts, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth
    13  II, became the first Honorary Veteran of the United States Armed
    14  Forces and earned the Order of Horatio Gates Gold Medal for his
    15  lifelong contributions toward maintaining the high morale of
    16  soldiers around the world; and
    17     WHEREAS, Mr. Hope's favorite activity was making people
    18  laugh; and
    19     WHEREAS, Mr. Hope died on July 27, 2003, at 100 years of age;
    20  therefore be it
    21     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
    22  achievements of Bob Hope, with deepest respect for his
    23  humanitarian efforts and admiration of his outstanding
    24  citizenship.
