           GEIST, BAKER, R. STEVENSON AND MAJOR, JUNE 17, 2003

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 17, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Observing the week of June 1 through 8, 2003, as "National
     2     Fishing Week" in this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, Fishing is an outdoor tradition rooted deeply in the
     4  history of our State and its citizens; and
     5     WHEREAS, Each year, 1.3 million Pennsylvanians fish
     6  Commonwealth waters, making more than 18 million trips to those
     7  waters; and
     8     WHEREAS, The sport of fishing not only provides wholesome
     9  recreational opportunities but also contributes some $1.1
    10  billion of economic input to this Commonwealth, supports more
    11  than 14,000 jobs for Pennsylvanians and contributes about $54
    12  million to the General Fund in State sales and income taxes; and
    13     WHEREAS, "National Fishing Week," June 1 through 8, 2003, is
    14  a cooperative program designed to promote recreational fishing
    15  and aquatic resource education in the United States; and
    16     WHEREAS, In conjunction with "National Fishing Week," the
    17  Commonwealth has marked June 7, 2003, as "Fish for Free Day";


     1  and
     2     WHEREAS, "Fish for Free Day" provides all Pennsylvanians with
     3  an opportunity to sample this Commonwealth's plentiful fishing
     4  opportunities without a fishing license; therefore be it
     5     RESOLVED, That the week of June 1 through 8, 2003, be
     6  observed as "National Fishing Week" in this Commonwealth.
