A RESOLUTION 1 Proclaiming May 2003 as "Infant Mortality Prevention Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Congenital anomalies, preterm/low birth weight, 4 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), problems related to 5 complications of pregnancy and respiratory distress syndrome are 6 the main contributors to infant mortality in this country; and 7 WHEREAS, The infant mortality rate in the United States 8 stands at 6.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, ranking the United 9 States 28th in the world; and 10 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania currently ranks 21st in the country, 11 with Philadelphia's infant mortality rate 50% higher than the 12 State's average; and 13 WHEREAS, While progress has been made in reducing the rate of 14 infant mortality, more can be done to alleviate this problem; 15 therefore be it
1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives support efforts 2 to reduce infant mortality in this Commonwealth through 3 research, medical services and education; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives proclaim May 2003 5 as "Infant Mortality Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.
