INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 11, 2003
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the 100th anniversary of Mont Alto Campus of The 2 Pennsylvania State University. 3 WHEREAS, The week of May 12 through 17, 2003, is being 4 celebrated as "Penn State Mont Alto Campus Centennial Week"; and 5 WHEREAS, On May 13, 1903, the Governor of Pennsylvania 6 established the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy in Mont Alto, 7 under the leadership of explorer and botanist Dr. Joseph T. 8 Rothrock, to train men for service in the State forests; and 9 WHEREAS, George Wirt, the Academy's first administrator, 10 patterned the school's curriculum after curricula in Germany, a 11 leading country in reforestation, and on Arbor Day 1905 he 12 assigned students to search for native tree species, an 13 assignment which resulted in the development of the Mont Alto 14 arboretum that continues to be used as a research site for the 15 development of hybrids; and 16 WHEREAS, In 1929 the Pennsylvania State College, now The 17 Pennsylvania State University, also offered a forestry program,
1 merged with the Mont Alto schools, and the Mont Alto Campus 2 continued its exclusive program in forestry until 1963, when it 3 became a two-year campus of the university; and 4 WHEREAS, Currently Mont Alto offers four baccalaureate 5 degrees and eight associate degrees and serves nearly 1,300 6 degree-seeking students annually, plus an additional 2,500 7 students who are enrolled in its continuing education unit; and 8 WHEREAS, The rich history of forestry and conservation 9 education and service is still very much a part of the Penn 10 State Mont Alto tradition as the campus begins the yearlong 11 celebration of the 100th anniversary of its founding; therefore 12 be it 13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 14 100th anniversary of Mont Alto Campus of The Pennsylvania State 15 University and congratulate all students, faculty members and 16 administrators who have enriched its history and traditions.
