INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 24, 2002
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of September 2002 as "Prostate Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Cancer of the prostate is, with the exception of 4 skin cancer, the most common type of cancer among American men 5 and is the second leading cause of cancer death among them; and 6 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that 7 each year there are about 10,000 new prostate cancer cases 8 diagnosed among men in this Commonwealth and nearly 2,000 9 Pennsylvania men die from the disease; and 10 WHEREAS, The risk of developing prostate cancer increases 11 with age, as evidenced by the fact that 75% of men with new
1 diagnoses of prostate cancer are over 65 years of age; and 2 WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is twice as common among African- 3 American men; and 4 WHEREAS, Early detection and screening for prostate cancer 5 are vital to combating the disease, especially for all men over 6 50 years of age, African-American men and men with a family 7 history of prostate cancer; and 8 WHEREAS, With early detection, the five-year relative 9 survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 100%; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, Greater public awareness and education about 12 prostate cancer is necessary to help protect the health and 13 welfare of men; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 15 September 2002 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in 16 Pennsylvania and encourage all men to educate themselves about 17 the risk of prostate cancer.
