INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 29, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating October 29, 2001, as "Pennsylvania Philanthropy 2 Day." 3 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has historically been in the forefront 4 of philanthropy and home to some of philanthropy's most renowned 5 pioneers, including Benjamin Franklin and Andrew Carnegie; and 6 WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians have developed a long tradition of 7 philanthropy, giving back to their communities and providing 8 critical resources to improve the quality of life in this 9 Commonwealth; and 10 WHEREAS, Community Foundations for Pennsylvania, Delaware 11 Valley Grantmakers and Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania 12 commissioned a study to measure and offer specific 13 recommendations to increase philanthropic giving to improve the 14 quality of life in the communities of this Commonwealth; and 15 WHEREAS, The report shows that philanthropy in this 16 Commonwealth has increased steadily over the past century, 17 culminating in a period of exponential growth in the 1990s; and
1 WHEREAS, The number of foundations in this Commonwealth 2 currently tops 3,000, with assets totaling nearly $28 billion; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania ranks third in the nation in 5 philanthropic assets; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October 7 29, 2001, as "Pennsylvania Philanthropy Day."
