INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 29, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing November 2001 as "National Diabetes Month." 2 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth recognizes the importance of 3 diagnosing and treating diabetes effectively; and 4 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth recognizes the importance of 5 promoting diabetes awareness and education; and 6 WHEREAS, The current national yearly health expenditures for 7 direct and indirect costs associated with diabetes are in excess 8 of $98 billion, with costs in excess of $6.7 billion in this 9 Commonwealth; and
1 WHEREAS, The number of people newly diagnosed with diabetes 2 across the nation is 798,000 each year; and 3 WHEREAS, The number of people with diabetes in the United 4 States is almost 16 million; and 5 WHEREAS, In the United States, 5.9% of the general 6 population, 10.8% of the African-American population, 10.6% of 7 the Hispanic population and 12.2% of the Native American 8 population have diabetes; and 9 WHEREAS, Diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness in 10 people 20 to 74 years of age; and 11 WHEREAS, Other complications of diabetes include heart 12 disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve disease and amputation; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, Good control of blood glucose levels in people with 15 diabetes has been shown to dramatically decrease the likelihood 16 of the occurrence of complications, thus improving the patients' 17 quality of life and decreasing health care expenditures; and 18 WHEREAS, Education concerning diabetes and its treatment is 19 critical to improving blood glucose control; and 20 WHEREAS, November 2001 is being celebrated as "National 21 Diabetes Month" throughout the United States; therefore be it 22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize 23 November 2001 as "National Diabetes Month" to highlight the 24 value of education in providing diabetes treatment which is cost 25 effective and improves the quality of life for people with 26 diabetes; and be it further 27 RESOLVED, That people with diabetes, their families and 28 friends and health care professionals in this Commonwealth be 29 urged to utilize this month to increase their awareness and 30 understanding of diabetes so that in the future people with 20010H0339R2766 - 2 -
