        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 23, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Expressing condolences to the families of deceased victims and
     2     surviving victims of the murderous attack on regional
     3     government officials of Zug, Switzerland, that occurred on
     4     September 27, 2001.

     5     WHEREAS, On September 27, 2001, a gunman entered the regional
     6  parliament chamber of Zug, Switzerland, dressed as a policeman
     7  and, using four firearms, opened fire on the public officials
     8  assembled there; and
     9     WHEREAS, The attack killed three members of the seven-person
    10  executive body and 11 of the 80-member legislature in Zug; and
    11     WHEREAS, Another 14 individuals were injured and hospitalized
    12  from the attack; and
    13     WHEREAS, The attacker, a Swiss national, later turned one of
    14  the weapons on himself; and


     1     WHEREAS, On October 1, 2001, about 3,000 people attended a
     2  memorial service in Zug, flags across the country were flown at
     3  half-staff, and the media observed one minute of silence to
     4  honor those who died in the attack; and
     5     WHEREAS, Speaker of the Swiss national parliament in Bern,
     6  Peter Hess, in his address to mourners stated that: "This was
     7  equally an attack on the canton of Zug, on the system of direct
     8  democracy, on our institution"; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    10  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania express condolences to the families
    11  of deceased victims and surviving victims of the murderous
    12  attack on regional government officials of Zug, Switzerland,
    13  that occurred on September 27, 2001; and be it further
    14     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    15  the regional legislature in Zug, Switzerland.
