        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 2, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2001 as "Italian Heritage
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Italian heritage is richly entwined in the history
     4  of the United States; and
     5     WHEREAS, The voyages of explorer Christopher Columbus
     6  resulted in the discovery of the American continents on October
     7  12, 1492; and
     8     WHEREAS, Italians and people of Italian descent have made
     9  remarkable contributions to the development of our country
    10  through exploration, science, literature, business and

     1  government; and
     2     WHEREAS, Our government was created and formed with
     3  contributions from Italian Americans such as William Paca, a
     4  signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Philip Mazzei,
     5  organizer of the Constitutional Society, a forum for development
     6  of the Constitution of the United States; and
     7     WHEREAS, James Latta graduated with six classmates in the
     8  first class of what is now known as the University of
     9  Pennsylvania; and
    10     WHEREAS, Alessandro Malaspina surveyed the Pacific coast in
    11  1791, drawing extensive maps and charts later used for further
    12  exploration of the territory; and
    13     WHEREAS, Eusabio Valli in 1816 contracted yellow fever for
    14  the purpose of developing a vaccine for immunization; and
    15     WHEREAS, On a sidewalk in Wilkes-Barre in 1897, Amedeo Obici
    16  first sold roasted peanuts, a business he later named the
    17  Planters Peanut Company; and
    18     WHEREAS, Rosa Maria Segale fought against great odds,
    19  including several encounters with the renowned outlaw Billy The
    20  Kid, to found the first public schools in New Mexico; and
    21     WHEREAS, Charles Joseph Bonaparte, Attorney General under
    22  President Theodore Roosevelt, founded the Federal Bureau of
    23  Investigation; and
    24     WHEREAS, Enrico Fermi's development of the first controlled
    25  nuclear energy reaction initiated the atomic age; and
    26     WHEREAS, Man landed on the moon under the direction of Rocco
    27  Petrone, director of the NASA Apollo space program; and
    28     WHEREAS, Italian Americans have bravely defended our country
    29  from the Revolutionary War to the present and led the fight
    30  against slavery; and

     1     WHEREAS, Twenty-four soldiers of Italian descent have been
     2  awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; and
     3     WHEREAS, Countless men and women of Italian descent have
     4  served our county with distinction, building roads, founding
     5  universities and making vital medical and scientific discoveries
     6  that have shaped the nation; and
     7     WHEREAS, The lives of Americans today are vastly improved and
     8  affected by the dedication and devotion of Italian Americans
     9  throughout history; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    11  month of October 2001 as "Italian Heritage Month" in
    12  Pennsylvania.
