        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 2, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of April 1 through 7, 2001, as "Lupus
     2     Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE, is a chronic
     4  inflammatory disease that causes the body's immune system to
     5  produce abnormal antibodies that attack healthy tissues and
     6  organs; and
     7     WHEREAS, Lupus can affect almost any body organ or system and
     8  there remains no known cause or permanent cure for this disease;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, Every year more than 16,000 Americans are diagnosed


     1  with lupus while at the same time an equal number of Americans
     2  may suffer from this disease without their knowledge; and
     3     WHEREAS, More than 1.4 million people suffer from lupus
     4  throughout the United States, and these sufferers are ten times
     5  more likely to be women than men; and
     6     WHEREAS, To improve the quality of life for individuals
     7  afflicted with lupus, early diagnosis and proper treatment are
     8  critical; and
     9     WHEREAS, Effective treatment can minimize symptoms and
    10  decrease the chance of permanent tissue or organ damage; and
    11     WHEREAS, Throughout this Commonwealth nonprofit health
    12  agencies and health care professionals continue their valiant
    13  fight against lupus through research, education and patient
    14  services; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    16  week of April 1 through 7, 2001, as "Lupus Awareness Week" in
    17  Pennsylvania.
