INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 21, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of May 6 through 13, 2001, as "Drinking 2 Water and Ground Water Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, While 80% of the earth's surface is covered with 4 water, only 1% of the water is suitable for human consumption; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Ground water, the water that soaks into the soil 7 from raindrops and moves downward to fill cracks and other 8 openings in beds of rocks and sand, makes up about 90% of the 9 fresh water on earth, not including polar ice caps; and 10 WHEREAS, In many cases, private water wells tapping ground 11 water resources can provide the highest quality water available 12 to homeowners and businesses; and
1 WHEREAS, Many people do not take this into consideration when 2 making decisions involving their own water supply, such as 3 choosing a home or taking a stand on local water supply 4 regulations; and 5 WHEREAS, The American Water Works Association established 6 "National Drinking Water Week" more than 30 years ago to call 7 attention to water as a precious natural resource; and 8 WHEREAS, The National Ground Water Association is conducting 9 a national campaign to designate May 6 through 13, as "National 10 Ground Water Awareness Week"; and 11 WHEREAS, The conservation of drinking water and ground water 12 and the assurance of maintaining water quality is essential to 13 this Commonwealth and our nation; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 15 week of May 6 through 13, 2001, as "Drinking Water and Ground 16 Water Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and urge all Pennsylvania 17 residents to conserve our precious drinking water and ground 18 water supply and preserve its superior quality.
