        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 13, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the courage and sacrifice of the men and women of
     2     the United States Armed Forces who served in the Persian Gulf
     3     on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Persian Gulf
     4     War.

     5     WHEREAS, Beginning with Allied air strikes in the predawn
     6  hours of January 17, 1991, through the expulsion of Iraqi forces
     7  from Kuwait six weeks later, United States troops braved many
     8  hardships in combat and incurred 148 battle deaths and 145
     9  nonbattle deaths, with hundreds wounded or missing in action;
    10  and
    11     WHEREAS, The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has
    12  reported that 24% of Gulf War veterans were considered to be
    13  partially or completely disabled as of December 31, 1999, and
    14  9,600 Gulf War veterans died as a result of Gulf War injuries


     1  and illnesses in the decade following the war; and
     2     WHEREAS, The Department of Defense and the Veterans
     3  Administration have reoriented to address health-related matters
     4  arising from Persian Gulf deployments, providing health care
     5  services to veterans on a priority basis and creating the
     6  Persian Gulf War Veterans Health Registry and the Office of the
     7  Special Assistant for Gulf War Illnesses; and
     8     WHEREAS, Veterans and their families in various communities
     9  across our nation are conducting remembrance ceremonies and
    10  candlelight vigils on February 28, 2001, the tenth anniversary
    11  of the cease-fire agreement, to recognize the contributions of
    12  United States servicepersons, our allies and civilians;
    13  therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate, on
    15  the tenth anniversary of the Persian Gulf War, the courage and
    16  sacrifice of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces
    17  who served in the Persian Gulf.
