        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 7, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of March 2001 as "National Colorectal
     2     Cancer Awareness Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of
     4  cancer deaths in the United States; and
     5     WHEREAS, It is estimated that in 2000, physicians will have
     6  diagnosed 129,400 new cases of colorectal cancer in the United
     7  States; and
     8     WHEREAS, In 2000 the disease is expected to have killed
     9  56,600 individuals in this country; and
    10     WHEREAS, Less than 50% of individuals over 50 years of age


     1  receive annual screenings for colorectal cancer; and
     2     WHEREAS, Adopting a healthy diet at a young age can
     3  significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer;
     4  and
     5     WHEREAS, March has also been designated as "National
     6  Nutrition Awareness Month," and the prevention of colorectal
     7  cancer is highly dependent on dietary factors; and
     8     WHEREAS, Regular screenings can save large numbers of lives;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, Education can help inform the public of methods of
    11  prevention and symptoms of early detection; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    13  month of March 2001 as "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness
    14  Month."
