INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 9, 2000
A RESOLUTION 1 Noting with great sadness the passing of J. Donald Budge. 2 WHEREAS, J. Donald Budge, one of the most beloved sports 3 heros of the United States and a revered citizen of this 4 Commonwealth, passed away January 26, 2000, at the age of 84; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Born June 13, 1915, in Oakland, California, Mr. 7 Budge gained national recognition in 1938 when he became the 8 first person to win the four most prestigious tennis titles, the 9 open tournaments of Australia, Great Britain, France and the 10 United States, and to this day he remains the only American to 11 have accomplished that feat; and 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Budge led the country to its first Davis Cup 13 title in 11 years in 1938, and that same year he was named the 14 Associated Press Athlete of the Year; and 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Budge received the James E. Sullivan Trophy in 16 1937, was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 17 1964 and was elected one of Tennis Magazines's 20 greatest
1 players of the 20th century; and 2 Whereas, Mr. Budge lived his life to the fullest and will be 3 forever regarded by contemporary players as a champion; 4 therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives note with great 6 sadness the passing of J. Donald Budge and recognize him as a 7 tennis legend and for his lifetime achievements and good 8 sportsmanship; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 10 the family of J.
