INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, NOVEMBER 16, 1999
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating November 1999 as "Velvet Revolution Month" in 2 Pennsylvania and recognizing the end of the rule of communist 3 dictatorship in Czechoslovakia. 4 WHEREAS, November 1999 commemorates the 10th anniversary of 5 the historic events which ended the rule of communist 6 dictatorship in Czechoslovakia; and 7 WHEREAS, On November 17, 1989, a brutal breakup of a mass 8 gathering triggered protests against the communist government of 9 Czechoslovakia, thus launching the Velvet Revolution; and 10 WHEREAS, On January 1, 1993, the Czech Republic and the 11 Slovak Republic emerged after a peaceful separation of the Czech 12 and Slovak Federal Republic; and 13 WHEREAS, The people of the Czech Republic and the Slovak 14 Republic are to be commended for their peaceful approach to 15 constituting two new countries and congratulated for bringing 16 their countries, over the past decade, into the world of freedom 17 and democracy; and 18 WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth hope that prosperity
1 and peace will continue to follow the people of the Czech 2 Republic and the Slovak Republic; therefore be it 3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 4 November 1999 as "Velvet Revolution Month" in Pennsylvania, and 5 call upon all residents of this Commonwealth to join in this 6 anniversary celebration.
