        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 19, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating November 6, 1999, as "The Carnegie International
     2     Day" throughout this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, The Carnegie International is the longest-running
     4  exhibition of contemporary art in the Western Hemisphere and is
     5  among the most influential surveys of contemporary art in the
     6  world; and
     7     WHEREAS, This year marks the 53rd installment of the
     8  exhibition at The Carnegie Museum of Art, and the exhibition is
     9  expected to attract over 200,000 visitors from around the
    10  region, the United States and the world; and
    11     WHEREAS, Contemporary art has an important economic, social
    12  and cultural influence on the people of Pennsylvania and helps
    13  create open and active discussion about issues important to us


     1  all; and
     2     WHEREAS, Madeleine M. Grynsztejn is being presented with a
     3  citation from the House of Representatives recognizing her work
     4  as curator of contemporary art at the Pittsburgh Carnegie Museum
     5  of Art; and
     6     WHEREAS, She has researched, developed and organized the
     7  exhibition by traveling to 25 countries on four continents
     8  during the past five years to assemble the esteemed group of
     9  artists who will participate in the exhibition; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
    11  November 6, 1999, as "The Carnegie International Day" throughout
    12  this Commonwealth.
