        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 30, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Proclaiming the week of October 5 through 11, 1998, as "School
     2     Crossing Guard Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, School crossing guards provide an important service
     4  to many of the Commonwealth's school districts; and
     5     WHEREAS, Urban school districts, including Philadelphia,
     6  Pittsburgh, Scranton, Allentown, Erie, Harrisburg, Chester, York
     7  and Lancaster rely on crossing guards to help thousands of
     8  children safely cross many dangerous intersections and safely
     9  arrive at school in the morning and back home again in the
    10  afternoon; and
    11     WHEREAS, Cities such as York, in which 98% of the students
    12  walk to school, depend on school crossing guards as the first

     1  line of defense to ensure that children have a safe trip to and
     2  from school, and motorists in this Commonwealth should be
     3  reminded of the importance of following directions given by
     4  crossing guards; and
     5     WHEREAS,  School crossing guards stand through rain, snow,
     6  sleet and the heat of the day to make sure many of this
     7  Commonwealth's students get to school and home again without
     8  incident or accident; and
     9     WHEREAS, School crossing guards can be seen as the unsung
    10  heroes in the school system who do an important job because of a
    11  love for children or a commitment to the community yet receive
    12  little attention or accolades; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend its thanks
    14  to all school crossing guards in this Commonwealth for their
    15  service to school districts and students and proclaim the week
    16  of October 5 through 11, 1998, as "School Crossing Guard Week"
    17  in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Governor
    19  and the Senate of Pennsylvania to also proclaim the week of
    20  October 5 through 11, 1998, as "School Crossing Guard Week" in
    21  Pennsylvania to honor the service and commitment of the people
    22  who provide this important service; and be it further
    23     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    24  each of the school districts in this Commonwealth so that each
    25  may provide a copy to the school crossing guards in its service.
