        INTRODUCED BY L. I. COHEN, RUBLEY, ROSS, SEYFERT, HERSHEY,
           READSHAW, PETRONE, MARKOSEK, McNAUGHTON, ORIE, CAPPABIANCA,
           LEDERER, PIPPY, PESCI, OLASZ, MYERS, ROEBUCK, COY, HALUSKA,
           STURLA, MELIO AND LAUGHLIN, MAY 5, 1998

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 5, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring May 11 through 15, 1998, as "Try Transit Week" in
     2     Pennsylvania; and encouraging all citizens to examine their
     3     personal travel choices and to commute via transit or share
     4     the ride.

     5     WHEREAS, Increased public investment in transit services
     6  provides the potential to create jobs and enhance business
     7  prosperity; and
     8     WHEREAS, Public transportation is vital to the quality of
     9  life and economic well-being of the citizens of this
    10  Commonwealth; and
    11     WHEREAS, Workers, schoolchildren, senior citizens, people
    12  with disabilities and those unable to afford an automobile use
    13  public transportation to gain access to jobs, schools, medical
    14  facilities and other fundamental services; and
    15     WHEREAS, The nation, our communities and our citizens face
    16  the risks to health and the environment that are brought on by
    17  automobile exhaust emissions; and


     1     WHEREAS, Traffic congestion which wastes productive time can
     2  be alleviated through the increased availability and use of
     3  public transportation and other forms of high-occupancy, shared-
     4  ride services; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association,
     6  the American Public Transit Association, the American
     7  Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the
     8  Association for Commuter Transportation, the National League of
     9  Cities, America's Coalition for Transit NOW, the Association of
    10  Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Citizen Action, the Surface
    11  Transportation Policy Project and the United States Conference
    12  of Mayors have declared May 11 through 15, 1998, to be "Try
    13  Transit Week" and have called upon all citizens to join in a
    14  nationwide effort to promote transit's benefits, honor transit
    15  employees and encourage new riders; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare May 11
    17  through 15, 1998, as "Try Transit Week" in Pennsylvania and
    18  encourage all citizens to examine their personal travel choices
    19  and to commute via transit or share the ride.
