INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 20, 1998
A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the memory of the United States Colored Troops and 2 declaring Saturday, May 23, 1998, as "United States Colored 3 Troops Day" in Pennsylvania. 4 WHEREAS, Soldiers from the United States Colored Troops 5 fought in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865; and 6 WHEREAS, Many of these soldiers were men from the greater 7 Steelton and Harrisburg areas who were assigned to the 54th and 8 55th Massachusetts Infantry and were sent to Camp William Penn 9 near Philadelphia for training; and 10 WHEREAS, These soldiers fought for the same reasons as their 11 counterparts but were overlooked for their contribution to the 12 United States; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory 14 of the brave men who fought and died for their country as 15 soldiers of the United States Colored Troops and declare 16 Saturday, May 23, 1998, as "United States Colored Troops Day" in 17 Pennsylvania.
