        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 11, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating June 1997 as "Ulcer Awareness Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, For many years, stress and diet were believed to be
     4  the cause of ulcers; and
     5     WHEREAS, After extensive research into ulcers, the primary
     6  cause was found to be the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H.
     7  pylori); and
     8     WHEREAS, Ulcers caused by H. pylori cost the Commonwealth,
     9  its citizens and businesses significant amounts of money in
    10  direct medical costs as well as absenteeism and lost
    11  productivity; and
    12     WHEREAS, There is a need to educate and provide information
    13  to all Pennsylvanians on the important medical facts related to
    14  the treatment and cure of ulcers; and
    15     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth has joined with employers, health


     1  care providers and organizations throughout this Commonwealth
     2  who are involved with educational efforts concerning this major
     3  advancement in the treatment of ulcers; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June
     5  1997 as "Ulcer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and urge
     6  citizens of this Commonwealth who are affected by ulcers to
     7  discuss the new treatment modalities to cure ulcers with their
     8  health care providers.
