                            A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing Congress to support legislation prohibiting access
     2     to Social Security numbers absent written consent.

     3     WHEREAS, Advances in technology and communication have made
     4  access to information from many sources readily and easily
     5  available to countless parties worldwide; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Social Security Administration and other
     7  agencies of the Federal Government collect and retain a vast
     8  amount of information regarding the finances of the citizens of
     9  the United States; and
    10     WHEREAS, Information such as Social Security numbers, names
    11  and addresses, income levels and sources as well as other
    12  financial data has been used in the past to the detriment of our
    13  citizens, particularly older Americans; and
    14     WHEREAS, Expanded access to the records of the Social
    15  Security Administration and other agencies of the Federal

     1  Government will make it easier for this information to be
     2  misused to the detriment of our citizens and particularly our
     3  senior citizens; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly
     5  memorialize Congress to support legislation that would prevent
     6  personal information retained by the Social Security
     7  Administration and other agencies of the Federal Government,
     8  including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, income
     9  levels, income sources and other financial data, from being
    10  accessed by the public by any means without the written consent
    11  of the individual identified in such data; and be it further
    12     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
    13  the President of the United States, to the presiding officers of
    14  each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from
    15  Pennsylvania.
