        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 29, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring June 1997 as "Leukemia Awareness Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania and urging all citizens of this Commonwealth to
     3     join in its observance.

     4     WHEREAS, This year more than 145,000 Americans will be
     5  stricken with leukemia or one of its related diseases of
     6  lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and multiple myeloma; and
     7     WHEREAS, Four in every 100,000 children in the United States
     8  between the ages of two and ten will be diagnosed with leukemia
     9  this year, and more children die from this disease than any
    10  other; and
    11     WHEREAS, Leukemia strikes ten times as many adults as


     1  children and is the leading fatal malignant disease in men and
     2  women under 35 years of age; and
     3     WHEREAS, The overall survival rate for leukemia has doubled
     4  in the last 20 years, and the effectiveness of recently
     5  developed treatment methods and steady advances in research
     6  bring us closer to finding the probable causes and cures for
     7  leukemia and related cancers; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America, a voluntary health
     9  organization, depends solely on the voluntary contributions of
    10  time and money by concerned businesses, groups and individuals;
    11  and
    12     WHEREAS, A primary goal of the Leukemia Society of America is
    13  to promote increased Federal and State funding of biomedical
    14  research, and finding the causes and eventual cures for these
    15  tragic diseases relies on continued funding and research; and
    16     WHEREAS, Past biomedical research is responsible for the most
    17  common form of childhood leukemia being considered a potentially
    18  curable disease; and
    19     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America, together with
    20  regional and local chapters, is dedicated to improving the
    21  quality of life of patients and their families and provides
    22  annual financial assistance to more than 6,000 patients with
    23  leukemia and other related cancers for expenditures not met by
    24  other sources; and
    25     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America is undertaking a
    26  nationwide campaign to find a cure by the year 2000; therefore
    27  be it
    28     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the month
    29  of June 1997 as "Leukemia Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
